How to Jailbreak the Iphone / Ipad iOS 5.1.1

The process is very simple but not without risk, so get informed before making the decision to jailbreak your iDevice, this is just an overview of the process I use, not a recommendation, I take no responsibility for any consequences of your actions =D

Jailbreaking your phone does not stop you from using the orginal app store or original apps, infact,  apart from the Cydia app that installs, you probably will not be able to tell the difference.

There are 2 types of Jailbreak out there. “Tethered” which requires you to jailbreak the device whenever it has to be powered off / reboot. “UnTethered” jailbreaks are handled by the the iDevice itelf and will re-jailbreak iteself on reboot. Absynthe is an unTethered jailbreaking program.

Step 1: download the latest version of absynthe, at time of writing this is version 2.0 which is compatible with iOS 5.1.1

Step 2: Make sure your device is up to date / at a compatible version with absynthe.

Step 3: Run absynthe, connect iPad / iPhone / iDevice , follow on screen instructions.

The Jailbreak process will restart your app a few times and can take some time (about 10 minutes for me).

Once complete your device will contain a new application called Cydia. This application is your gateway to installing all the jailbreak software, themes and tweaks availbale for iOS.
Cydia sources its list of available applications from websites known as repositories. You can add to this list of repositories and broaden the scope of applications availble.

Initially only a few sources are available, the first thing you will probably notice is that Jailbreak apps are not all Free, some apps are more expensive than anything you’ll find on the app store.
A quick google search of “Best jailbreak repositories” will give you a good insight into the types of sources available.

In Cydia, clicking the manage icon (4th icon bottom of screen) and then clicking sources will bring up the current sources list. Now you can click edit and add to add new sources.

A common source to add is http://cydia.hackulo.us

Once a source is added you can click into it to browse available content, common hackulous packages to install are:

-> Installous 5 – this package will link directly to the websites where you can download the software + handles the download / install

->  AppleSync iOS 5.0+ (or whichever version matches your iOS) – this application will allow itunes to sync apps you download from the net

When downloading apps from the net onto your pc you will need to drag the .ipa file into itunes (over the apps icon) and then either sync it with the apps selected of drag the app onto the device icon.

That’s pretty much all you need to get you started.

Lock / Password Protect Individual Apps on IPhone

Contrary to popular belief it is actually possible to lock an individual app on the iphone or ipad! Unfortunately, you must jailbreak your iphone to use these apps.

The good news is that jailbreaking your iphone isn’t a difficult task, nor does it stop you from using all the features (including app store) that you had before. A couple of apps worth mentioning are lockdown pro and locktopus, these two apps will do the job but at the time of writing there is no current version for latest iOS 5 so the solution I found is called iProtect.

Cydia (this is the jailbreak type app store) has this application for sale legitimately or if your a dodgey bugger you can find the cracked version in one of the top 5 dodgey repositories.

Iprotect simply requires you to supply a password and then select the applications you would like to lock, very easy setup. It also allows you to lock Icons and prevent uninstalling apps + more.

This application can be used as a solution to many common situations, such as:

  • My Kids play games on my ipad but I dont want them in the appstore or on my facebook!
  • The ipad is shared around the office but I want to prevent changes being made to its setup!
  • My partner knows my phone pin but id rather not have them looking through my browser history!
  • Generally I just want to limit access to certain applications!

Vedic Maths Tutorial

Vedic Maths is a system of mathematical tricks used to crunch big numbers with blazing speed.

Heres an example of what im talking about. If we want to square a number that is close to, but greater than 100 … say 107 for a simple example. We take the difference between 100 and 107 which is 07 and we add it to the original value, now we have 114 this is the first 3 digits of our answer now we square the 07 part and end up with 49 which is out last 2 digits, our whole answer is 11449.

Again with another number 112.

 112 + 12 =124 and 12 x 12=144 (here we have to carry a digit ) so our answer becomes 12544.

Some Basic Tutorials to get you going can be found here, I will post more in comments as I find better ones.
